Students Explore Nation’s Capital on Mystery Trip
Imagine not knowing where your travels will take you until you arrive on the bus.
The Mystery Trip is known to be one of the most anticipated events of the year. Each fall, students spend the day traveling and exploring a mystery city with their friends and fellow classmates.
This year’s destination: Washington, D.C.
“I wanted the opportunity to see a new place, meet new people, and embrace the spontaneity of the trip. I was excited that it was D.C. because, while I have been there quite a few times, it meant I could see new places that I hadn’t seen previously.”
Coffee fueled up with pastries and lattes at DUA DC Coffee before walking past the World War I Memorial and the Department of Justice on her way to the Museum of Natural History.
“When we arrived at the museum, we got to travel throughout time seeing birds, gems, giraffes, and elephants,” she says.
Coffee wrapped up her day by visiting the Eastern Market, where she listened to jazz music, spoke to vendors, sampled great food, and saw cool artwork. The Mystery Trip has been a staple at DeSales since 2011. This year, tickets sold out in just two minutes.
“I think students love the idea of being able to let go,” says Andrea Guarino, associate director of student engagement and leadership. “There are so many things that are rigid in their lives and schedules—going to class, having to do homework, going to work. Students love the idea of not knowing where they’re going and being able to spend the day with their friends.”
Previous Mystery Trips have taken students to cities across the northeast. The event is so well received, it even sparked a new outing—a Mystery Dinner, which is held in the spring and takes students to a surprise restaurant where they enjoy a three-course meal.
