Increased possibilities. A love of learning. The desire to build upon a legacy of hard work.

These are just some reasons first-generation students choose to do what no one in their family has done before: earn a college degree.

Founded by Moravian University in 2018, the Tri-Alpha honor society recognizes academically successful first-generation college students. This year, the Eta chapter of Tri-Alpha at DeSales inducted 17 students at a special ceremony.

“Not only am I a first-generation college student but a first-generation American,” said Nancy Rodriguez ’23, a nursing major. “My parents wanted me to create a better life for myself and education opens up so many more opportunities. My successes in my education are not only mine, but they’re also my family’s.”

To be eligible for the Eta chapter, students need to meet the following criteria: being first-generation, maintaining a minimum GPA of 3.2, and having completed at least 60 credits toward their graduation.

“I decided to attend college because I have always liked to learn new things. This desire helped push me to pursue a degree in computer science,” said Eric Ricco ’24, who is following the cyber security track. “Being a first-generation college student means a great deal to me. My family has worked very hard to give me this opportunity to better myself and get an education in an area I am passionate about.”

At the ceremony, the Eta chapter also inducted two honorary members: Tahereh Hojjat, Ph.D., professor, chair of the economics major, and Fred Richter, the director of student athlete services, and women's basketball coach.

Congratulations to all of this year’s inductees:
