The DeSales Dance Season Opens with Emerging Choreographers Concert
The dance department opens its 2022-2023 season with the popular Emerging Choreographers Concert on November 4-6 in the Schubert Theatre of the Labuda Center for the Performing Arts.
The Emerging Choreographers Concert is a program of new dances choreographed by a select group of student choreographers. Under the artistic direction of Angela Sigley Grossman, associate professor of dance, the concert, from the choreographers to the performers, designers, and student managers, is primarily student-run.
“This beloved annual performance is a chance for us to turn the stage over to our student choreographers. We are excited to present new choreographic premieres by our talented upperclassmen dance majors, who are exploring a range of themes in their research and choreography. These contemporary works showcase the versatility and creativity of our students.”
The contemporary works in the Emerging Choreographers Concert are six world premiere dances that focus on modern themes of depression, social justice, and living life to the fullest. One work is inspired by the contemporary African dance form of Umfundalai, which combines traditional African dance elements with African American-derived rhythms. The word Umfundalai means “essential” in Kiswahili.
Performances are Friday, November 4, at 8:00 p.m., Saturday, November 5, at 2:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m., and Sunday, November 6, at 2:00 p.m. and take place in the Schubert Theatre in the Labuda Center for the Performing Arts. There will also be a pre-recorded 24-hour streamed performance on Saturday, November 12.
Tickets are $18 for adults, $15 for seniors and students, and $8 for DSU/LVAIC students for all performances and $15 per-viewer for the 24-hour stream. Tickets are available by calling the Labuda box office at 610.282.3192 or online at tickets.desales.edu.
