Slovakian Students Take Part in DeSales Political Science Class
Dr. Andrew Essig recently welcomed some special guests from across the Atlantic into his virtual classroom.
More than a dozen students from Comenius University in Bratislava, Slovakia—along with their professor, Dr. David Reichardt, and several Slovakian high school students—took part in Essig’s WC107 Central European Nations class.
The group discussed democracy in the central European country, Slovakia’s parliamentary electoral history since its independence, and the stability of its governmental institutions, political party system, and elections.
“It turned out to be a great experience for all involved, and our DeSales students especially enjoyed it,” says Essig, professor of political science and chair of the social sciences department and political science program. “The hope is that this will be a recurring event, and perhaps even develop into a travel abroad component course.”
Essig and Reichardt met two years ago at the Society of Catholic Social Scientists’ annual meeting at Franciscan University and have been friends ever since. They planned the virtual class for several weeks to correspond with Essig’s teaching of Slovakia.
