Nursing Student Rachel Medlar Receives LeCoMASE Scholarship
A big confidence boost. That’s how nursing student and scholarship recipient Rachel Medlar ’22 describes the Lehigh County Medical Auxiliary Scholarship and Education Fund (LeCoMASE).
Medlar is the latest recipient of the fund’s $1,000 nursing scholarship, which was presented by Martha Maffeo, president of LeCoMASE, and Barbara Peters, chair of the nursing scholarship program.
“I couldn’t believe it at first,” Medlar says. “I just felt so appreciative because I know how prestigious of a scholarship it is. I felt very lucky to even be considered.”
The scholarship is awarded to a third-year nursing student who lives in Lehigh County and is in good academic standing. Medlar calls nursing the perfect fit and says she can’t wait to get out in the field.
“I love the personal approach to nursing,” she says. “I feel like it’s different than every other healthcare field because you really get to build those relationships with your patients. That’s something that I find really special.”
LeCoMASE was established in 1968 to provide financial assistance to medical students from Lehigh County. In 2013, it set up a nursing scholarship award at DeSales.
