Nursing Majors Test Skills in Mass Casualty Drill
Forty-two senior nursing students sprang into action during a mass casualty drill in the Gambet Center.
Students played the role of first responders and were split into groups to work with nearly a dozen simulated patients — doing everything from triaging to diagnosing and treating. The students were not told details of the drill in advance and were asked not to share them since the same scenario may be used again in the future.
"They really got a lot out of it," says Dr. Mary Lou Gies, assistant professor of nursing. "When you're in the hospital, you have every resource, and you usually know what the diagnosis is. When you have a mass casualty, you have to really figure out what you can do to help your patients. It was a new experience for them."
