DeSales Students Build Computer Room for Casa Guadalupe
Underprivileged kids in the Lehigh Valley will soon have new technology at their fingertips, thanks to dozens of dedicated DeSales students.
Approximately 50 students are building a new computer room at Casa Guadalupe, a non-profit, community-based organization that provides a range of services to residents of all ages in the Lehigh Valley.
"Casa is very well maintained but they don't have the technology that they need," says Victoria Gaffney, a graduate assistant with the Center for Service and Social Justice.
Instructor Joseph Walsh's CS-230: Computer Architecture and Hardware Support class is building the 12 computers; Student Government Association donated $250 for supplies; and the facilities department donated computer tables and chairs.
"Some of these kids are in high school and they don't have computers at home," says Gaffney. "They don't have access to those things. If you don't have the resources to go online then you're really at a disadvantage."
DeSales students have already cleaned, painted, and decorated the room. Next, they'll deliver the tables, chairs, and new computers.
"The first week we got there, we witnessed so much heartbreak from these kids," says Gaffney. "They have so many struggles. This is something to motivate and inspire them."
