Congratulations to our Winter 2018 Graduates

Rev. James Greenfield, OSFS '84, conferred degrees upon 175 students as he presided over his first commencement ceremony as president of DeSales University.

"I'm delighted to be here for my first commencement," Fr. Greenfield told the crowd of graduates, families, and faculty members as he introduced Frank Ford '74, the commencement speaker.

Ford (right) served as president of St. Luke's Hospital – Allentown Campus before becoming the chief integration officer at St. Luke's University Health Network. He is also a trustee of DeSales University.

"You are the newest minted graduates of DeSales University," Ford told students. "DeSales University is an awesome institution. Now you have that credential as you go about your journey. Doors are going to open to you now."

Ford encouraged students to make a difference, to add value to whatever they do, and to eventually give back. He also shared the five principles that have guided him in his journey: health and fitness; good stress; a positive outlook and attitude; personal relationships; and appreciation.

Before handing out the diplomas, which ranged from bachelor's to master's and doctoral degrees, Father Greenfield snapped a few pictures of the crowd to put on his new presidential Twitter account. "I want all of my presidential colleagues around the world to be jealous of what we're doing here today," he joked.

He also shared two of his favorite quotes from Saint Francis de Sales: "bloom where you are planted" and "live Jesus." "This University, founded on the inspiration of Francis, is embodied in living Jesus," he said. "If you want to remember what it's all about, live Jesus."

In addition to the January 2018 degree recipients, DeSales awarded 230 degrees to students in September 2017. Because there is no formal ceremony in September, the September graduates are invited to take part in the January commencement.
