The Laptop Lifestyle
As a recent graduate or current college student, you've likely spent a large chunk of your academic career attending classes remotely due to the pandemic. Similarly, the job market has seen a massive shift towards remote and hybrid positions, with many companies embracing the benefits of a virtual workforce.
Going remote opened a bunch of new doors and opportunities, but along with it came new challenges that may be difficult to navigate. For recent grads, this can be both exciting and daunting. On one hand, you have the flexibility to work from anywhere, but on the other, you'll need to adapt to a new way of collaborating and building relationships with coworkers you may never meet in person. One of the biggest challenges of remote work is standing out and making your presence known when you're not physically present. Here are some tips to help you stand out in a virtual workplace:
- Communicate, Communicate, Communicate!
In a remote setting, you can't rely on regular office interactions to keep up with your team. Be proactive in communicating your progress, challenges, and ideas, and use video calls whenever possible to create a more personal connection. The ability to put a name to a face goes a long way! - Stay Organized
Without the structure of an office environment, it's easy to lose focus, lose track of tasks, or fall behind. Develop a routine and use project management tools such as calendars to stay on top of your tasks and deadlines. - Seek Mentors
Building relationships with more experienced colleagues can be trickier when you're not in the same physical space. Actively seek out mentorship opportunities and schedule regular check-ins with your manager or a senior team member. They can teach you from their experiences in the field you are pursuing and connect you with others. They could also be used as a reference in the future if you maintain a good relationship with them. - Maintain Your Online Presence
In a remote setting, your online presence becomes even more important to let people know who you are. Make sure your professional social media profiles are up-to-date and showcase your skills and accomplishments. Connect with your coworkers on LinkedIn for networking opportunities and stay up to date with their accomplishments. Make sure to be professional in all forms of communication, even within any internal messaging apps used by your employer.
While remote work may take you some time to adjust, it also presents unique opportunities for you if you choose a remote career. Embrace the flexibility, hone your virtual communication skills, and don't be afraid to go the extra mile to make yourself known.
