Interviewing: Quick Tips All Students Should Know

by Carl Tyce, ’23, Career Ambassador Oct 10, 2022

Another way to set yourself apart from the competition is to show an interviewer all aspects of yourself. While the STAR technique is great for analyzing answers you provide, you first need to know how to answer any given question. Here are some ways to really shine in an interview:

1. Remember that an interview is a conversation

This means it’s okay to not be nervous and instead get into a groove with your interviewer. Even a little small talk before the interview is a good thing. This gives them a look at your personality.

2. Show your passion in an interview

A smile can go a long way in an interview, and showing genuine interest in a position shows an employer that you want more than just a job. Instead, you are looking for something you will enjoy doing.

3. Know yourself

Many times, an interviewer will ask a question meant to throw you off, or they may ask a question which could be answered in many different ways. By knowing what you value, what you like, and more, you can provide an answer that highlights what makes you great.

4. Go beyond the resume

When giving answers to questions, answers do not have to come from the resume. For example, an employer may ask for a unique skill you have. While a previous job may have taught you some, plenty of hobbies and other activities give you skills as well. So, while you could tell an employer how you gained patience from your job in retail, discussing a woodworking hobby could do the same thing and show a new aspect of yourself to the employer.

5. Do your research!

Employers have websites that outline company values. By researching these, you can structure your interview questions to emphasize the values desired by the company. For example, if a company values teamwork, you can stress experiences on your athletic team. Research on the interviewer is also valuable. Not only does it allow you to make some small talk, but it also allows you to find potential similarities that you can use to make your interview more memorable. For example, an interviewer’s company biography may state that they have a love of hiking. If you do as well, you have a way to make a deeper connection with them. These all show that you’ve gone above and beyond to prepare for the interview.
