Build your Personal Brand
Nike prompts us to “Just do it” in their campaigns with the famous check mark logo prominently displayed. Dunkin reminds us that “America runs on Dunkin” along with their brightly colored logo that can catch your eye from a distance. Both of these companies have become memorable in their industry through consistent and influential branding.
Your personal brand should become just as memorable within your circles of contact. As part of that circle, future potential employers will search for unique applicants whose story fits their mission. Your personal branding can tell your story and influence how people perceive your potential in the industry.
Developing a personal brand might seem challenging, but here are some steps to help you get started on communicating your unique identity.
1. Become searchable in your field
Many employers will google job applicants to gain a better snapshot of the candidates prospects. So, begin fine-tuning your social media to reflect your unique personality, your brand, and themes within your future career. Be sure to clean up irrelevant “old memories” that may not align with the “future you”. Don’t forget to utilize your LinkedIn to post relevant material, share your expertise, and connect with groups in your future field.

2. Know your niche and your strengths
It is important to know where your strengths lie and what is natural to you. Then, be sure those strengths are reflected in all of your branding. As you build your brand, identify any unique experiences that set you apart and exemplify your drive toward your career goals.

3. Engage in your development on campus and at home
Actively engage in your personal development and establish your brand. Employers look for well-rounded individuals that will contribute to their company. When two applicant’s qualifications are identical for a position, employers will look beyond the resume to make the final decision. You are more than just your major; highlight your other attributes and values. Pursue things that interest you and embrace those experiences.
4. Continue to network
Networking is simply connecting to others, something you do every day. Each encounter is a valuable opportunity to leave a positive impression. You never know who will shape your future and whose future you will impact.

As you proceed through your college career, your brand is always growing and changing. Each experience will make your brand a more memorable and unique reflection of you. Engage in your life now to continue building the future version of you, and your brand.
