About the Library
Trexler Library operates to serve the educational and scholarly needs of students, faculty and staff, and our community.
Your Trexler Library CardIf you have a DeSales University photo ID you have your library card! It's that simple. You can get your University ID by visiting the University Card Office in the University Center. Members of the community who wish to be library patrons can be issued a card after presenting a valid form of ID like a driver's license.
Library Policies
Noice Policy
- Trexler Library is committed to providing an environment that is conducive to study as
well as welcoming to all users. All library staff and users of the library should respect the rights of others and refrain from making excessive noise while using the University Library. - If users are disturbed by excess noise, including but not limited to loud conversations, cell phone use, or music, please speak to a Trexler Library staff member. The library staff reserves the right to ask individuals to leave the library if the noise levels remain high after requests to quiet down.
Cell Phone Policy
- Audible ringers should be turned off on cell phones and other devices on entering
Trexler Library. - Please use the enclosed area between the entrance doors on the first floor to make or
receive phone calls. - All library personnel are authorized to request that disruptive use of cell phones or
other electronic devices be discontinued immediately.
Unattended Items Policy
- For your protection, valuables should never be left unattended while at the library.
- Any personal property which is left unattended for two or more hours will be stored for
safety reasons in a locked space behind the circulation desk. At library closing, any items not already retrieved by their owner will be sent to Police and Public Safety.
Food and Drink Policy
- Library users are permitted to have covered drinks and snacks throughout the library.
Users are expected to act courteously and responsibly. - Please clean up any spills or crumbs, report any large spills, dispose of trash and
recyclables, and be conscious of excessive noises or smells. - The Trexler Library staff reserves the right to ask users to remove their food or drink if it
disturbs other users or causes damage to the library.
Room Bookings
- Study Rooms
- Use of study rooms is restricted to current DeSales students, faculty, and staff. For this reason, you are required to use your DeSales email address (@desales.edu) to reserve the room. Each individual may reserve a study room for up to two hours per day. Reservations may be made up to thirty days in advance.
- Sensory Room
- Sensory Room 2.0 is provided by the Trexler Library in partnership with the Office of Student Accessibility. It was designed to provide a therapeutic, calming space where students, faculty, and staff can relax and take a break from their current environment.
- Eligible Users: Access to the Sensory Room is for students, faculty, and staff of DeSales University only.
- How to Reserve the Room
- The room can be reserved at the Circulation Desk at Trexler Library.
- Library staff or student assistants will unlock the Sensor Room for the patron.
- Room Policy
- Only one patron may use the room at a time.
- The room can be reserved for 30 minutes at a time.
- Multiple bookings by the same patron on the same day will be dependent upon room availability and at the discretion of library staff.
- The room can be booked up until one hour before the library is scheduled to close.
- Do not remove any items, furniture, and equipment from the Sensory Room.
- Serenity Pod Policy
- Trexler Library’s Serenity Pod is provided to DeSales University’s students, staff and faculty as space where an individual can engage in quiet study, prayer, zoom interviews, virtual doctor visits, and make private phone calls.
- Eligible Users: Access to the Serenity Pod is for students, faculty, and staff of DeSales University only.
- Reservations:
- A reservation is required before using the Serenity Pod. Anyone using the Serenity Pod without a reservation will be asked to leave if there is a patron with a reservation to use the Serenity Pod at the same time.
- The Serenity Pod can be reserved either online or at the Front Desk for up to two hours per day per patron.
- Room Policy
- Only one patron may use the Serenity Pod at a time.
- Covered drinks and snacks are permitted in the Serenity Pod. Patrons are responsible for cleaning up any crumbs or spills and reporting any large spills to library staff. Patrons are also responsible for disposing of any trash and recyclables.
- Do not remove any items, furniture, and equipment from the Serenity Pod.
- Any damage to the Serenity Pod or issues with the Serenity Pod’s amenities (such as the furniture, charging stations, ventilation, lighting, etc.) should be reported to a library staff member immediately.
Books (except for Popular Reading and Reference)
DeSales University students, faculty, and staff may check out an unlimited number of books, except for books from the Popular Reading and Reference collections:
- Students: the loan period for books is 45 days allowing for one renewal if the book is not on hold for another patron.
- Faculty and staff: the loan period for books is 5 months subject to renewal if the book is not on hold for another patron.
Popular Reading and Reference
DeSales University students, faculty and staff may check out up to five books at a time from the Popular Reading Collection and five books at a time from the Reference Collection.
The Loan period is 30 days for books from the Popular Reading and Reference collections allowing for one renewal if the book is not on hold for another patron.
Media
- Media materials available for check out include DVDs, Blu-rays and CDs.
- DeSales University students, faculty, and staff may check out a total of five media items at a time.
- Loan period for Media is 30 days allowing for one renewal if the item is not on hold for another patron
- Media on Permanent Reserve (recordings of University events, theatrical performances, etc.) can be checked out for up to 3 hours and can only be viewed within the library. Only faculty may check Permanent Reserve Media out of the library.
Laptops
DeSales University students, faculty, and staff may check out loaner laptops over the course of a semester (see TREXLER LIBRARY LAPTOP CIRCULATION POLICY).
Calculators, Headsets, and Webcams
DeSales University students, faculty, and staff may check out calculators, headsets and webcams over the course of a semester.
Overdue Items

There is no daily overdue fee for items checked out from Trexler Library, but patrons will be charged for the cost of the item if the item exceeds 30 days overdue, plus a $10 processing fee per item.

Fines and fees for overdue items will be billed to the student’s account by the end of the semester and submitted to the Bursar’s office.
End of the Semester
- Students are required to bring back all items borrowed from Trexler Library by the last day of the semester, unless an arrangement has been made with a full-time Library Staff Member to keep items over break.
- Students will be charged for the cost of items not returned by the last day of the semester, plus a $10 processing fee per item.
- Fines and fees for items not returned by the last day of the semester will be billed to the student’s account and submitted to the Bursar’s office.
Recall of Borrowed Items
Borrowed items can be recalled for an earlier due date if the item is needed by another patron. There is a minimum loan period of 30 days before an item can be recalled.
Course Reserves Material
Materials on Course Reserve are available to be checked out for two hours (books) and three hours (media). Items on Course Reserve cannot be taken out of the library.
Interlibrary Loan
- DeSales University students, faculty, and staff may check out materials from other libraries through our Interlibrary Loan services.
- Due dates and renewals are subject to the lending library.
- Fines and fees for overdue Interlibrary Loan items will be assessed by the lending library and will be charged to the patron’s library account. Charges are submitted to the Bursar’s office.
Online Resources
- DeSales University students, faculty, and staff are welcome to use all library computers and online resources.
- Online resources are accessible from anywhere using a patron’s DSU login credentials.
Non-Circulating Items
- The following items do not circulate and cannot be checked out:
- Serials/Journals/Bound Periodicals
- Microfilm/Microfiche
- Items in the Archive Collection
- Items in the Butz Collection
Members of the community who are not DeSales University Faculty, Staff, or Students are welcome to become patrons of Trexler Library and use a selection of the library’s resources and materials.
Community Members include but are not limited to: DeSales University Alumni, LVAIC Universities, local area residents, DeSales Parents Association, Pennsylvania Shakespeare Festival participants, and DeSales Summer Programs.
Registration for a Library Card
- A library card is required if you intend to check out materials from the library. Trexler Library Access Cards only give you access to the building and are not used as a library card.
- Please present a valid photo ID (Driver’s License, Marywood or Chestnut Hill ID) at the Circulation Desk if you are requesting a library card.
- The community no-fee library card registration is for one year.
Using the Library
- Access to the Trexler Library is by DeSales University ID card. Community Members will need to ring the library’s front doorbell and speak to a staff member through the intercom. You may be asked to provide a valid photo ID (such as a driver's license) at the Information Desk.
- Community Members may check out books and movies (max five items total at one time). Books circulate for a 30-day borrowing period and may be renewed once. Movies circulate for a 14-day borrowing period and may not be renewed.
- Books can be renewed over the phone by calling 610-282-1100 x1266 during open library hours.
- Books and movies may be recalled earlier than the due date if needed by DeSales faculty, staff, or students. A phone call and/or email will be sent to the Community Member if an item they have checked out needs to be recalled.
- Patrons are not subjected to a daily overdue fine, but if items are more than 30 days overdue, the patron will be charged for the cost of the item and a $10 billing fee per item.
- Community members may not check out any items from the Popular Reading Collection or from the Reference Collection.
- Community members may not use Trexler Library’s Interlibrary Loan service.
- Community Members may access our library databases, the internet, and Microsoft Office from the designated Public Access Computers located on the first floor.
- Printing is not available to Community Members. Please save your work to either the cloud (such as Google Drive or Dropbox) or to an external drive. Flash Drives are sold at the Circulation Desk for $4.00.
- Copying is not available to Community Members. However, Community Members may us the KIC Scanner to scan copies to their email or save to a flash drive.
- Campus visitors should park in the Dooling Hall visitors’ section, DeSales University Center, Labuda Center, or Gambet Center parking lots. The Trexler Library lot is designated for students.
Exceptions
- Pennsylvania Shakespeare Festival Participants and DeSales Summer Programs Registrations for borrowing privileges are for the duration of the program.
