Chemistry Demonstrations
From flaming bubbles to frothy beakers and freezing fish, this annual event makes learning fun for our students and for the local children in attendance.
Each academic year during both the fall and spring semesters, the Department of Natural Science at DeSales University presents awe-inspiring chemistry demonstrations sharing some “secrets” of science to approximately 1,000 students from area middle and high schools who attend performances during the school day in both the fall and spring semesters.
There is no cost to attend; however, reservations are required and fill up quickly. If your school is interested in attending a Chemistry Demonstrations show, please contact NaturalScience@desales.edu.
The demonstrations are a treat for all the senses and include over a dozen highly visual and entertaining experiments such as Fire Tornado, Mad Scientists, Freezing Fish, Invincible Snowballs, Ping Pong Predicament, and making and tasting liquid nitrogen ice cream. The colorful and explosive presentations are designed to be visually interesting and exciting, as well as illustrative of important but easily understood chemical concepts.
The DeSales faculty, staff, and students who participate in the Chemistry Demonstrations Program seek to instill a love of science and to enrich students understanding of chemistry.
The Chemistry Demonstrations Program is directed by Dr. Rodger Berg, Associate Professor, and he is assisted by Natural Science Department Faculty, including Associate Professors Dr. Julie Himmelberger and Dr. Francis Mayville; Assistant Professors Dr. Sara Hayik, Dr. Joshua Slee, and Dr. Steven Sweeney; and Chemistry Laboratory Manager Mrs. Patricia Hartman.
