Snow and Inclement Weather Procedure

DeSales University’s protocol for snow and inclement weather is as follows:

  • A decision is made whether to close, delay, or remain open by 5:00 a.m.
  • If a decision is made to extend a delay or change a delay to a closing, it will be communicated two hours prior to the first announced delay time.
  • The decision is communicated via the University’s home page, phone system, e2campus, and local media.
  • This process is then repeated by 2:00 p.m. for evening classes.
  • School officials make decision using the best information they have available at the time. The weather at the DeSales campus may be quite different from where you live, and it is sometimes difficult to determine how a 5:00 a.m. decision will resolve later in the day.

Commuting Students: Ultimately, you must make the best decision for yourself regarding traveling to campus in inclement weather.

  • Students who decide not to attend class on a day of inclement weather should communicate with the faculty member who teaches the class.

Faculty: The decision whether to hold a virtual class is left to the individual faculty member within the following guidelines:

  • If instruction occurs, the class may be asynchronous or synchronous.
  • If synchronous instruction occurs, it must be at the scheduled class time. The lecture must be recorded and posted for students who are unable to attend.
  • Students must be informed via the Brightspace announcement feature and an email clearly stating expectations about class instruction on the day the University is closed.

All Employees: Unless you have been instructed otherwise, you are expected to stay home during the hours when the University's campus is closed for inclement weather. In such cases, the University will continue operations remotely. Supervisors are responsible for setting the expectations of work for their employees during these closures.

Everyone: Confirm your e2campus alerts are active so you receive timely and relevant information. Your safety and well-being are very important to us.
