The Faces That Make Us: Stacey Finney
Stacey Finney hopes to achieve a lot of things in her new role as the director of the Academic Success Center.
Her main goal? She wants students to know that there’s a place for them at the center and that the staff genuinely care for their wellbeing.
“Many times, students just want to talk about what they did over the weekend or tell us about an accomplishment or if they are having a bad day,” Finney says. “We go beyond providing academic support. We are a home away from home. We welcome students with open arms and without judgment.”
Why are you passionate about higher education and helping others?
I have always worked in fields where I can help others. It's in my nature. I spent 20 years working in child welfare in Philadelphia before moving into higher education. As a first-generation college student, I know the challenges that many students face as they navigate their college experience. It is important for students to see they are not alone, they have the support around them to see this through, and they will get to where they are going.
Favorite event to attend in the Lehigh Valley?
Christkindlmarkt, the IronPigs, and DeSales performances. There are so many cool and unique gifts to buy for friends and family at Christkindlmarkt. It's fun just to walk around and breathe in Christmas cheer. The IronPigs games are great family fun. I also really enjoy coming to the Labuda Center for the Performing Arts to see students perform.
What’s your favorite food on campus?
My favorite Friday cheat food at the DUC Grill is crispy chicken, bacon, cheddar, BBQ sauce, and shredded lettuce in a grilled wrap. Diana makes it the best!
What makes DeSales special?
Where to even begin? DeSales is a great place to work. We have an outstanding student body that is bright and curious. I’m also surrounded by terrific, like-minded people who are here for the betterment of students' lives and their lived experiences. As cheesy as it may sound, I firmly believe in the welfare of humankind and having empathy and compassion, and it is important to me to live that in my work. DeSales’ core values align with this.
