Meet Maggie Evans: Psychology Major and Leadership Scholarship Winner
Rising Sun, Maryland
1. How did you first hear about DeSales?
A girl from my high school came here to play field hockey and to be in the physician assistant program. I talked to her once I started applying and becoming more interested. She said she loved it here.
I had been looking to play lacrosse and to be able to find a really good school for my major. I did a prospect day here; that was the first time I stepped on campus. That was my “Okay, I know I want to be here” moment.
2. Describe your reaction when you found out you won the Leadership Scholarship.
I was in study hall, and it was the last period of the day. All my friends were around. My advising counselor called me. I just picked up in the room; I didn’t even think to walk outside.
He said, “You got the scholarship.” I just froze. I immediately started crying. All my friends were around me, and they all started cheering and hugging me. I immediately called my mom, my stepdad, and every relative I could think of.
3. Which clubs/activities are you involved in here on campus?
I play lacrosse, and I signed up for the psychology club, Women in Science, and Colleges Against Cancer. I also volunteered at the Special Olympics Eastern Fall Sectional with my lacrosse team. We were the powerlifting group, so I was the announcer for the powerlifters. My next big thing is figuring out studying abroad.
4. What’s your favorite thing about campus?
Everything is within walking distance. DeSales feels big but it’s small enough that it makes me feel a little closer to home. There are also so many things that DeSales offers for students to do. In the first few weeks, we went to an IronPigs game, we went mini golfing, we went bowling. It’s really comforting to see that there’s constantly an effort being made for the students.
5. Tell us a fun fact about yourself.
My birthday is on Halloween.
The Leadership Scholarship is a full-tuition scholarship offered to six students who have shown outstanding leadership in their high school careers and who plan to continue to develop those skills at DeSales. The deadline to apply is Thursday, December 1, 2022.
