Effective immediately and in accordance with Pennsylvania Act 153, all new faculty and staff at DeSales University whose position with the University has been determined to potentially have direct contact or routine interaction with individuals under 18 years of age must successfully complete a background check, including a Criminal History Report from the Pennsylvania State Police, a Child Abuse History Clearance from the Department of Human Services and a fingerprint based criminal history submitted through the FBI as a condition of employment. Additional background checks may be required based on the specific requirements of the position.

The Graduate Assistant is a contract position renewable for up to 3 total years of service, (contingent upon performance in the position and continued graduate enrollment).  The position is live-in and shares in the administration, supervision, and development of DeSales University’s off-campus tutoring and mentoring programs in the Lehigh Valley through the Service and Social Justice office.


• Bachelor’s degree required

• Must be accepted into a DeSales University graduate program and maintain active enrollment or be enrolled in a comparable Master’s program at a nearby institution

• Negative TB Test

• Act 153 (PA State Criminal History, Child Abuse Clearance, FBI Fingerprint Clearance)

• Act 151 (Child Abuse) Background Check Information

• Act 114 of 2006, 24 PS 1-111, Law for Federal (FBI) Background Check

• Act 34 Background Check Information

• Previous relevant experience mentoring/tutoring in an underserved community, or a background in education

• Related experience with youth, and curriculum and lesson planning

• Must be computer literate with the ability to use Microsoft and social media applications

• Facilitation skills

• Strong written and oral communication skills

• Strong organizational skills, the ability to plan and lead events, to keep and collect records and data

• Management skills

• Strong communication, interpersonal, & leadership skills preferred

• Sensitive to issues of ethnicity, disability and diversity

• Dedicated to the mission of a small, Catholic, liberal arts institution
